JAMR XZVR puts two sides of a breakup in conversation on “CRASHR (95/Nightdrive Hinkmix)” and “Crash Dummy,” a pair of alternative R&B-pop tracks built around the fallout of a relationship that refuses to end cleanly.
Across the two songs, the New York artist creates a musical exchange between two people who have reached very different conclusions about the same relationship. “CRASHR” takes the perspective of an ex trying to get JAMR XZVR back after the relationship has ended, driving at 95 mph through the night before eventually turning up at his home uninvited. Based on a real-life moment, the track turns that encounter into something tense and restless, with its production matching the urgency of someone who has yet to accept that it’s over.
Its counterpart, “Crash Dummy,” answers from the other side. using the language of a car crash as a metaphor, the song works through the toxicity of the relationship, the heartbreak of its ending and the suffocating feeling of being unable to escape someone who refuses to let go.
That contrast is what makes the pair work. While “CRASHR” feels frantic and immediate, “Crash Dummy” stays with the emotional wreckage left behind. Neither song tries to reduce the relationship to a straightforward victim-and-villain story.
“I hope these songs takes people to a time and place where they reminisce on heartbreak of any form from any situation, not dwell but simply reflect on that time of their life,” JAMR XZVR says.
The artist recently brought “CRASHR” into a different setting through a collaboration with Blind Barber, appearing in the brand’s campaign and filming a two-song live set at its East Village lounge.
For JAMR XZVR, the meaning ultimately belongs to the listener. The story may come from one relationship, but its aftermath leaves enough room for anyone to recognize something of their own.
