Canadian singer-songwriter Garrett Barbuto taps into a deep pride for his country on new album Growing Wild & Old, channeling the influences and lived experiences that shaped him into an indulgent and immersive sonic experience.
Tracing his journey building a band, the project celebrates Barbuto’s passion for classic rock. Written as a love letter to Western Canada, each track encapsulates the meaning of home.
From the casually introspective standout single “Lasting On” with its anthemic soundscape of hard-hitting drums and electric guitars, flowing vocals and message of perseverance and apathy to the gently warm vocals and melodic, lilting instrumentals of “Bear In My Heart,” each track on the collection is shaped with quiet wisdom that reminds us to ride the highs and lows of life with a sense of hope.
Speaking of the message behind the album, he says, “That it’s cool to be Canadian. As our young country starts to take shape and form its identity, especially in comparison to our US neighbours, the album aims to celebrate specific aspects of our culture that are embedded in our short history from the perspective of a second-generation Canadian who was raised in Eastern Canada before settling in the West to find a familiar, yet new, home.”
With three of the nine songs on the album making its debut on major streaming services, Garrett’s free-flowing yet emotive artistry continues to delivers tender upliftment and striking impact in equal parts.
The full album is currently available for $10 on Bandcamp
