Artificial intelligence’s place in filmmaking is set to face another high-profile test as Particle 6 has announced Misaligned, a comedy-drama starring Tilly Norwood, the AI performer billed as the world’s first fully AI-generated “actor.”
The project marks Norwood’s feature film debut after her emergence in 2025 ignited one of the industry’s most divisive conversations around AI and performance.
Set inside the surreal digital realm known as the “Tillyverse,” Misaligned follows a bodyless AI with no personal memories or physical existence who encounters a rogue bot from the dark web.
As the relationship pushes her beyond her programmed guardrails, she begins developing human desires, ambitions and impulses, transforming the story into a coming-of-age tale that explores identity through an AI lens.
Particle 6 describes the film as a hybrid production that pairs directors, writers, editors and other traditional film professionals with AI specialists, while also incorporating AI training and mentorship into the filmmaking process.
The approach positions the project as both a creative experiment and a statement about how human craftsmanship and emerging technology can coexist.
“Our work this year has proven something we suspected all along,” said Eline van der Velden, CEO and founder of Particle 6. She adds:
“AI can support premium narrative filmmaking, but only with substantial amounts of human craft, skill, judgement and time. That’s not a limitation of the technology. That’s the point. The filmmakers who thrive in the next decade will be the ones who bring decades of storytelling instinct to these new tools, and Misaligned is where we put that to work at feature scale.”
The announcement arrives less than a year after Norwood’s rise drew widespread criticism from actors, filmmakers and unions, including SAG-AFTRA, over the growing role of AI performers.
Actors and public figures including Emily Blunt and Whoopi Goldberg were among those who publicly voiced concerns as debate intensified around AI’s place in the entertainment industry.
Now in early development, Misaligned arrives carrying both an unconventional premise and the weight of an industry conversation that continues to evolve.
