Country artist Julie Eddy is leaning into vulnerability on her latest single, “What If We Don’t,” a country release that explores the uncertainty of reconnecting with someone you never truly got over.
Out now, the track begins with an unexpected run-in between former lovers, trading guarded distance for the possibility of a second chance. Rather than dwelling on heartbreak alone, Eddy asks what could happen if two people stopped pretending they’d moved on.
“What If We Don’t” sits comfortably in the emotional grey area between letting go and holding on. Eddy keeps the writing grounded in a familiar scenario, using a chance encounter with an ex to explore the push and pull between protecting your heart and risking it all for love one more time.
Instead of relying on dramatic twists, the song lets its central question carry the weight, making its reflections on regret and hope feel believable rather than overstated.
The single also serves as a companion piece to Eddy’s breakout track, “Two Truths & A Lie.” “We wanted to revisit the scenario of running into an ex at a bar, but offer an alternate ending,” Eddy explains.
“Instead of playing games or pretending you’ve moved on, this story is about being honest and laying all your cards on the table, admitting you still want another shot at the relationship and hoping it could turn into something lasting.”
While the song revisits familiar country territory, its strength lies in its restraint. Rather than offering neat resolutions, “What If We Don’t” leaves room for uncertainty, allowing its quiet honesty to resonate long after the final chorus. It’s another confident step for Eddy, proving that sometimes the simplest stories leave the strongest impression.
Eddy co-wrote “What If We Don’t” with Maddie Lenhart, while Brad Hill produced the single and David Thomson handled mixing. The release also arrives ahead of Eddy’s appearance on Warren Zeiders’ Relapse, Lies & Betrayal World Tour stop in Sioux City, Iowa.
