After years away from releasing original music, Boston-based singer-songwriter Jena returns with “battleground,” a deeply reflective R&B and neo-soul single that breathes new life into a song years in the making, marking the beginning of a new artistic era.
Rather than framing life’s challenges as obstacles to conquer, “battleground” explores the quieter struggle between resistance and acceptance. Written during a period of uncertainty and completed years later, the track reflects how time, personal growth and motherhood reshaped Jena’s perspective on purpose, identity and resilience.
Instead of chasing dramatic resolutions, the song leans into emotional honesty, allowing its message to unfold with quiet confidence through soulful melodies, warm neo-soul textures and understated arrangement.
The single also carries a personal story behind the scenes. Produced by Jena’s husband, musician and producer Feri Bong, “battleground” was one of the first songs Jessica Nathania, who records under the name Jena, shared with him when they first met.
Years later, that same creative partnership, built alongside a family and a home studio, has transformed an unfinished idea into the first release of a new series of original music.
Reflecting on the song’s evolution, Jena shares, “I wrote this song believing that every battle had to be won. Finishing it years later taught me otherwise. I hope people realize that strength doesn’t always look like fighting harder. Sometimes it looks like letting go, accepting where you are, and trusting what you can’t yet understand. Some battles ask us to push forward, while others ask us to surrender what was never ours to control in the first place.”
That sentiment sits at the heart of “battleground,” making it a song that’s less about finding resolution than embracing life’s unanswered questions.
