First Light Feature: The global rise of pre-loved fashion and the changing meaning of personal style

Second-hand fashion is no longer confined to thrift stores or the quieter corners of retail. It has become one of the defining shifts shaping contemporary style and consumer behaviour.

As part of Lyrical Muse’s first digital zine First Light, we explored how pre-loved fashion evolved from a niche alternative into a global movement driven by individuality, sustainability and changing attitudes toward consumption.

The shift is particularly visible among younger consumers. According to ThredUp’s annual resale report, two in five items in Gen Z wardrobes are already pre-owned, while second-hand shopping continues to grow rapidly across global markets.

But beyond affordability or trend cycles, many consumers are turning to resale in search of something increasingly difficult to find in fast fashion: personal identity.

“People are just done with looking like everyone else,” says Goa-based designer Cyron Fay Rodricks of Cyron Denim Den. “Fast fashion has made everything too accessible and too repetitive.”

That desire for individuality has helped transform resale platforms, vintage stores and curated thrift businesses into influential parts of the fashion ecosystem. Digital platforms such as Depop, Vinted and Poshmark have also made second-hand shopping more accessible, immediate and global.

For others, the movement reflects a return to older habits of rewearing and repurposing clothing. “We are now all slowly starting to see value in returning to our roots and making conscious choices,” says GON Vintage founder Shreya Jain.

The feature also examines how pre-loved fashion intersects with sustainability, rising luxury prices and emotional attachment to clothing. Designers and stylists increasingly view garments not as disposable purchases, but as pieces with longevity, memory and resale value.

What emerges is a larger cultural shift. Second-hand fashion is no longer viewed as second best. It represents a more deliberate way of dressing, shopping and engaging with fashion itself.
