Veteran Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday (April 12, 2026) at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. She was 92. Hospital officials said she died of multi-organ failure following a cardiac arrest.
Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, later confirmed on social media that doctors admitted Bhosle on the evening of April 11 with a chest infection and extreme exhaustion. As per TOI report, Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating the music icon, confirmed that she passed away due to multiple organ failure.
Her son, Anand Bhosle, also confirmed the news outside the hospital. “She passed away today,” he told reporters, adding that the public may pay their last respects at her residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, from 11 a.m. on Monday (April 13). The last rites will be held at Shivaji Park at 4 p.m.
Political leaders and members of the film fraternity paid tribute to the singer, whose career spanned more than seven decades. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray described the loss as the end of a defining era in Indian music. “Her voice brought happiness to many generations and touched people’s emotions,” he said. “After Lata Didi, she stood as a support for a major era in music. That support has now fallen.”
Born in 1933 into a musical family, Bhosle began singing at the age of 10 with “Chala Chala Nav Bala” for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943). She entered Hindi cinema with “Saawan Aaya” in Chunariya (1948) and rose to prominence with her work in Naya Daur (1957), where she sang for actor Vyjayanthimala.
Over the decades, she became one of the most versatile and prolific voices in Indian cinema, recording in multiple languages including Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Malayalam. Her body of work, spanning classical compositions, film songs, and popular music, earned her recognition from the Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist of her time.
Asha Bhosle received the honour of Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. Her passing marks the close of one of Indian music’s most enduring chapters.
