Montréal-based art-rock project, Pastel Blank unveils quirky single “Sweet Nic,” accompanied by vivid visuals.
A tongue-in-cheek anthem led by the band’s signature genre-bending psychedelia, the track channels an ironic, witty energy underpinned by an eccentricity that keeps us hooked.
With distorted instrumental layers and catchy vocal delivery, the accompanying music video matches the anthemic vibe of the track with its cinematic, hypnotic quality.
Influenced by Brian Eno’s Here Come the Warm Jets, the track delivers a balance of silly and sinister as an entrancing story unfolds before us. Shot on a busy summer day in Vancouver’s East Side, the music video is playful and absurd rooted in a DIY feel while still delivering a polished message.
Speaking of the track, singer and songwriter Angus Watt says: “I wrote Sweet Nic after being left unattended with Connor Head’s accursed Juul (while Juul’s were still legal in Canada) when he and I lived together in an apartment in Victoria’s Chinatown. The idea was to write a song about (or around) nicotine without using any words that were too obvious, such as “cigarette” or “smoking”. What started as a writing exercise has resulted mostly in confused reactions, or people asking who Nic is. Hopefully the music video with the bruiser cigarette thugs clears things up.“
