Hollywood is remembering James Van Der Beek not only as a television icon, but as a friend, mentor and devoted family man.
In the hours following news of his death at 48 after a battle with bowel cancer, colleagues from across film and television shared tributes that painted a portrait of an actor defined by warmth, humility and quiet strength.
His Dawson’s Creek co-stars led the outpouring. Katie Holmes, who played Joey Potter opposite Van Der Beek’s Dawson Leery, posted a handwritten note on Instagram honoring his “bravery, compassion, selflessness and strength,” along with his deep “appreciation for life.” She added, “I mourn this loss with a heart holding the reality of his absence and deep gratitude for his imprint of it.”
Busy Philipps, who joined the teen drama in later seasons, called him “one in a billion.” In one tribute, she wrote, “James Van Der Beek was one in a billion and he will be forever missed and I don’t know what else to say. I am just so so sad.”
In another post, she reflected more broadly: “My heart is deeply hurting for all of us today…every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness.” She later added, “He was my friend and I loved him and I’m so grateful for our friendship all these years,” and said she was “profoundly heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly and their six magical children.”
Mary-Margaret Humes, who portrayed Van Der Beek’s mother on Dawson’s Creek, described him as her “gracious warrior.” “Rarely am I at a loss for words… today would be the exception. James, my gracious warrior, you fought a hard battle against all odds with such quiet strength and dignity,” she wrote.
She also shared that their final conversations, “merely a few days ago,” will remain “forever sitting softly in my heart for safe keeping,” and asked fans to respect the family’s request for privacy.
Kerr Smith, another co-star, wrote, “I’m so grateful for being able to call James a brother. I’ll miss him deeply. Rest easy.” Austin Nichols added, “James represented something to aspire to. As a friend, husband and father, I know he was even more powerful and inspiring. You will be missed.”
Outside the Dawson’s Creek circle, tributes continued to pour in.
Reese Witherspoon, an executive producer on the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel Elle, in which Van Der Beek will appear posthumously, said she was “devastated” by the loss. “What an extraordinary, talented man who also showed great kindness and grace in every action,” she wrote. “Praying all the angels watch over his family during this difficult time.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar also commented saying, “I’m so sad for your beautiful family. While James’ legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world. F*ck Cancer.” Chad Michael Murray described him as “a giant,” writing, “His words, art and humanity inspired all of us — he inspired us to be better in all ways. God bless you guys.”
Krysten Ritter, his co-star in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, remembered him as a “beautiful human inside and out.” She wrote, “Smart, funny, empathic, kind, talented and just pure magic. I’m so grateful for our friendship and so heartbroken. All my love goes out to his amazing wife Kimberly and their children. Love you so much James and fake James.”
Emma Slater, who partnered with Van Der Beek during Dancing With the Stars Season 28, described him as family and expressed gratitude that she had the chance to say goodbye.
Paul Walter Hauser shared a fundraiser total on Instagram alongside a heartfelt message: “Love you, James. I know you’re in heaven being pampered with love. The Van Der Beeks will be in our daily prayers and we’ll be drumming up some money to support your beautiful family. Thanks for the body of work and for being one of the good guys.”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who stepped in for Van Der Beek at a planned Dawson’s Creek reunion last September when illness prevented his attendance, said his “whole heart” was with the actor’s family.
Alfonso Ribeiro revealed that he had recently said goodbye to his “true friend, brother and life guide.” “I was with him through this horrible journey to beat cancer. His family and friends went on this roller coaster ride. The highs when it looked like he had it beat to the breaking lows of it coming back,” he wrote, adding that he will always cherish serving as godfather to Van Der Beek’s daughter Gwen and now sees him as a guardian angel.
Retired wrestler and former cheerleader Stacy Keibler reflected on spending time with Van Der Beek in his final days. “When you know time is sacred, you don’t waste a single breath. You don’t rush. You don’t scroll. You don’t worry about tomorrow. You sit. You listen. You hold hands. You watch the sky change colors and you let it change you too,” she wrote.
“In these past days, you taught me more about being present than any book ever could. You showed me what it looks like to trust God’s plan, even when it breaks your heart. Especially when it breaks your heart.”
Actress Jennifer Garner also shared her condolences, calling his passing a “heartbreaking loss” and sending love to Kimberly and their children as they “navigate this tender time.”
The Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) honored Van Der Beek for bringing “sincerity, depth, and heart” to his performances, while fans across social media described him as a defining presence of late-1990s and early-2000s television.
As tributes continue to circulate, many have also rallied around his family. A GoFundMe campaign launched shortly after his passing has raised over $1.2 million at the time of writing to support his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children — Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah. Organizers said the family faced significant financial strain during his treatment and now seeks assistance with living expenses and the children’s education.
Through the flood of messages, one theme remains constant: colleagues remember James Van Der Beek not only for the roles that defined a generation, but for the generosity and grace that defined his life.
