Noel Gallagher is coming home with one of British music’s highest honours. The BRITs 2026 have named Gallagher as this year’s Songwriter of the Year, recognising a body of work that has shaped generations and continues to define the sound of British music worldwide.
The award, decided by a panel of expert judges, celebrates exceptional songwriting talent. Previous recipients include Ed Sheeran, RAYE, Kid Harpoon and Charli xcx. Gallagher will accept the honour in his hometown of Manchester at the Co-op Live on 28 February, marking a full-circle moment for one of the city’s most influential musical exports.
For over three decades, Gallagher’s songwriting has lived at the heart of British culture. From Oasis’ era-defining anthems like “Live Forever”, “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” to the expansive, genre-pushing records released with Noel Gallagher’s “High Flying Birds”, his catalogue has remained both timeless and restless.
His solo albums — High Flying Birds, Chasing Yesterday, Who Built the Moon? and Council Skies — further cemented his reputation as a songwriter unafraid to evolve.
The honour arrives after a monumental year for Oasis. Their Live ’25 reunion tour ended 16 years of speculation and turned into a global cultural moment, with 41 sold-out shows and chart domination back home. In 2025 alone, Oasis sold over one million albums, a feat no other UK artist matched.
Stacey Tang, Chair of the 2026 BRIT Awards Committee and Co-President of RCA Records at Sony Music UK, echoed the sentiment:
“For more than three decades, Noel has crafted songs that have become part of our collective story – bold, brilliant, and always recognisable. His songs have soundtracked memories for multiple generations and defined the spirit of British music globally. Honouring Noel as Songwriter of the Year celebrates a remarkable body of work and a creative force that continues to connect and inspire artists and fans worldwide.”
The BRIT Awards 2026 will air live from Manchester’s Co-op Live on Saturday, 28 February, exclusively on ITV and ITVX.
