The future of Mr. & Mrs. Smith on Prime Video has been thrown into uncertainty. Season 2 of the hit spy series, originally expected to begin filming this fall, has been delayed indefinitely due to unresolved casting issues, as first reported by Deadline.
The hold means the cliffhanger ending of Season 1 — which left Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s John and Jane Smith in a gunfight with their fates unresolved — will remain unanswered for the foreseeable future.
Neither Glover nor Erskine were expected to return in Season 2, though Glover remains an executive producer alongside co-creator Francesca Sloane. Instead, new leads were brought in: Anora’s Mark Eydelshteyn was announced in December, followed by Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher in February.
Guest casting rumors circulated over the summer, with names like Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, and Gael García Bernal floated for recurring roles. However, the parties never finalized those deals.
Momentum appeared to be building earlier this year when the California Film Commission awarded the Amazon MGM Studios-produced drama a $22.4 million tax credit to relocate production from New York to Los Angeles. Now, insiders say New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios are eyeing a possible restart on pre-production at the end of 2025, with hopes of mounting a 2026 shoot.
The timeline casts doubt on the status of the California incentive, which requires projects to start filming within 18 months of receiving the credit. While it’s possible the series could apply for a new allocation, delays of this scale can be costly and destabilizing for large-scale productions.
Adding to the uncertainty, showrunner Francesca Sloane recently signed an overall deal at HBO, where she will write the opening episode of Big Little Lies Season 3. Though she remains attached to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, her expanded slate could further complicate the Prime Video project’s timeline.
Season 1 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, released in February 2024, reimagined the 2005 Brad Pitt–Angelina Jolie film as a high-stakes spy marriage drama. The show was both a critical and audience hit, becoming one of Prime Video’s top five new series debuts in the U.S. that year and earning 16 Emmy nominations. It ultimately took home two trophies, including Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Michaela Coel.
Amazon and New Regency have not disclosed whether Season 2 will continue the story of John and Jane or shift to new characters entirely. For now, fans will have to keep waiting — and guessing — about what comes next.
