New Music Friday never misses, and this week is stacked with releases that prove the wait was worth it. From long-awaited fan favorites finally making it to streaming, to surprise collaborations that flip the script, and even a jazz classic reimagined for the screen, today’s drops deliver something for everyone.

Let’s dive into the songs shaping your weekend playlists.

Alec Benjamin — “The Knife in My Back”

After seven years of living only as a demo passed around YouTube and TikTok, Alec Benjamin has finally given fans the official release of “The Knife in My Back.” Out now with a lyric video, the track cuts deep into themes of betrayal and heartbreak, carried by Benjamin’s signature conversational vocals and stripped-back folk-pop style.

What makes this release even more special is its history—originally shared in 2018, the song became a fan favorite through word-of-mouth and viral clips. Alec Benjamin even updated one of its most quoted lines, shifting “blood runs black” to “heart’s gone black,” a subtle change that adds polish to a track that’s already raw with emotion. Long requested and long overdue, this is one NMF drop that delivers on the wait.

Calvin Harris & Jessie Reyez — “Ocean”

Calvin Harris dives back into dance-pop waters with “Ocean,” this time enlisting the powerhouse vocals of Jessie Reyez. Out today, the track arrives after a swirl of speculation—an earlier version featuring Miley Cyrus never saw the light of day due to what Harris called “crossed wires” in production. Reyez, however, feels like the perfect fit, her soulful delivery cutting through Harris’s glossy, melody-driven production.

The pair aren’t strangers either: she co-wrote co-wrote Harris’s smash “One Kiss” and appeared on “Hard to Love” from Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1—but this marks their most full-circle collaboration yet. With Reyez’s soulful delivery floating over Harris’s sleek production, “Ocean” feels both hypnotic and radio-ready.

Latto & Ice Spice — “GYATT”

Once rivals, now tag-team partners, Latto and Ice Spice have put their feud aside and delivered a high-energy collaboration with “GYATT.” The track dropped Sept. 4, pairing booming production with witty one-liners as both rappers flex their confidence and charisma.

Fans are especially buzzing over the WWE-inspired video, complete with a wrestling ring, ladders, and meme-worthy cameos—turning the release into a full-on spectacle. Given their history of trading shots in verses and interviews, this unexpected alliance makes “GYATT” feel like more than just a single; it’s a power move that has the rap world talking.

RAYE — “What a Difference a Day Makes”

RAYE takes a timeless jazz classic and makes it her own with a stunning new cover of “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Released today, the single ties into her upcoming appearance in Netflix’s Black Rabbit, where she performs the track on-screen while playing herself alongside Jason Bateman and Jude Law.

Originally immortalized by Dinah Washington’s Grammy-winning 1959 recording, the standard gets a fresh, soulful touch through RAYE’s emotive delivery. It’s a graceful pivot from her pop and R&B hits, showcasing her versatility while setting the tone for one of fall’s most anticipated series.
