As BTS celebrated its 12th debut anniversary on June 13, leader Kim Namjoon—known to fans worldwide as RM—penned an emotional letter that quickly became the highlight of the day.

Shared on the group’s official fan platform, Weverse, the letter struck a powerful chord with millions of ARMYs worldwide. More than a simple thank-you, it unfolded like a heartfelt memoir—raw, nostalgic, and intensely personal.

At once a personal confession and a collective reflection, RM’s words traced the group’s journey from their 2013 debut to the present, capturing the spirit of resilience, growth, and the unshakable bond between BTS and their fans.

This year’s anniversary arrives at a pivotal moment for the group. With most members now discharged from South Korea’s mandatory military service, including RM, just three days earlier, the band stands on the brink of a long-awaited reunion. The timing of RM’s message felt all the more significant, serving as a bridge between 12 transformative years and the new chapter that lies ahead.

“Happy Birthday, BTS. 6/13 is here again. I can’t believe it’s June 13 again. I’ve been waiting, waiting, really waiting,” RM began. What followed was a candid reflection on growth, vulnerability, and the shared journey between BTS and their fans. “The 12th anniversary… 12 years old! It feels like my niece from the multiverse. I’m glad you grew up well,” he wrote with a touch of playful tenderness. “Listen carefully to your parents—no, maybe just a little. It’s one of those nights when these kinds of thoughts come to mind… I really didn’t know today would come.”

Beyond marking a milestone, the letter delved into the weight of time, the trials endured, and the unwavering support from ARMYs that carried them through. “Through days of fatigue and sleepless nights, through incomprehensible people and thoughts that cling like tails—I’ll push through all those obstacles once more, and venture bravely into the tomorrow,” RM wrote.

“At every overwhelming crossroads, it’s because of you that I endured, because of you that I moved forward. I’m grateful, so grateful.” He signed off with a line that encapsulated the letter’s raw sincerity: “When I try to keep it short, it always ends up long. Guess I’m still too young & immature to be concise. But talkativeness is also proof of clumsy love, so please look on it kindly.”

RM’s words offered a rare and poignant glimpse into his inner world, particularly following his recent military discharge—a time he has candidly described as mentally and emotionally taxing. During a Weverse livestream shortly after his return, he touched on the struggles of service and the slow, ongoing adjustment back to everyday life. That vulnerability added even more weight to his anniversary message.

RM’s letter ignited an outpouring of emotion across social media, with fans flooding timelines with tributes, memories, and messages of gratitude. Hashtags like #12YearsWithBTS and #ThankYouNamjoon quickly trended worldwide as ARMYs reflected on their connection with the group. “This is beautiful. Thank you,” one fan wrote. Another echoed the shared sentiment: “HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BTS. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING. WE STAYED.”

This anniversary also marks a symbolic turning point for BTS and their fans. It signals a homecoming. With six of the seven members—Jin, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—now back from military service, and SUGA’s discharge set for June 21, BTS is poised for a long-awaited reunion. To commemorate the milestone, their agency HYBE has organized BTS FESTA at the KINTEX Exhibition Center 2 in Goyang, South Korea, on June 13 and 14, promising exclusive content, appearances by members, and fan interactions led by Jin and J-Hope.

FESTA 2025 began earlier this month on June 1 with a stream of new releases and heartfelt messages from the members, but it was RM’s letter that truly anchored the celebration. Amist all the excitement, his words served as a quiet reminder of BTS’s humble beginnings, their enduring bond with ARMY, and the imperfect but unwavering love that has carried them this far.

As the group prepares to reunite, this 12th anniversary feels less like a milestone and more like a return to something deeply familiar. And with RM at the helm, speaking from the heart, the future of BTS already feels like a promise being kept.
