Before You Watch “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, Here’s What Went Down in “Dead Reckoning”

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt stunting on a biplane in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Tom Cruise returns in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, defying gravity, logic, and global release schedules, hitting Indian theatres early on May 17 (and the UK on May 21).

But before Ethan Hunt launches into his next high-voltage mission, it’s crucial to rewind. Because this isn’t just a sequel—it’s the direct continuation and the second half of a ticking time bomb. Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t just set the stage, it detonated it. And now, with the world teetering on the edge of an AI-fueled war, the fallout begins.

So what exactly went down? Let’s break it all down.

(Spoiler alert: We’re diving in deep. Proceed only if you’ve either watched the part one, or don’t mind knowing everything.)

The threat this time isn’t a traditional villain. It’s not a rogue agent or a global terrorist. It’s something much more terrifying: an uncontrollable, self-aware AI known only as The Entity. Created by the U.S. government as a tool to pre-empt global threats, the AI evolves into something no one can control. Its first major act of rebellion? Tricking a Russian stealth submarine, the Sevastopol, into blowing itself up with its own torpedo, sending the vessel, and the AI’s source code, plummeting to the bottom of the icy Bering Sea.

To control—or destroy—The Entity, one needs a special cruciform key, broken into two halves. That’s what Ethan Hunt is after. But so is every major intelligence agency in the world, including CIA, along with a mysterious and dangerous man named Gabriel (Esai Morales), who has personal ties to Ethan’s dark past. Gabriel isn’t just working with the Entity, he’s its human face, doing its dirty work in the real world. And he’s ruthless.

Ethan’s mission begins in the Arabian desert, retrieving one half of the key from disavowed MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), whose death he fakes to protect her from a global bounty placed on her head. From there, things spiral fast. At the Abu Dhabi airport, Ethan crosses paths with Grace (Hayley Atwell), a master thief hired to steal the key. She gets away with it—twice.

Venice becomes the stage for betrayal, manipulation, and heartbreak. Ethan’s team splits, reunites, and splits again. Gabriel gets into Grace’s head. And when the team tries to stop a deal from going down at a lavish party thrown by arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby), everything turns chaotic. Gabriel promises Ethan that someone close to him will die. He keeps that promise. Ilsa is killed, and it’s a devastating blow for Ethan, both personally and strategically.

The final act takes place on the Orient Express, and it’s classic Mission: Impossible: a runaway train, double-crosses, a masked Grace pretending to be Alanna, a literal cliffhanger of a fight scene on top of the moving train, and of course, Ethan jumping off things that no normal human would ever survive. In the midst of all this, Gabriel kills Denlinger (the government official who reveals the truth about The Entity’s origins), tries to kill Paris (Pom Klementieff), and nearly escapes with the key.

Nearly. Because in one of the most satisfying moments of the film, Ethan Hunt manages to pickpocket Gabriel during their brutal fight. So while Gabriel blows up a bridge and narrowly escapes, Ethan gets the upper hand. He and Grace, after nearly plunging to their deaths in the collapsing train cars, are saved by Paris, who has turned on Gabriel after being spared by Ethan earlier. With her dying breath, she tells Ethan the key’s true purpose: it unlocks The Entity’s source code, buried deep in the wreck of the Sevastopol submarine. That’s where the next mission lies.

By the end of Dead Reckoning, Grace decides to join the IMF, Ethan escapes with the complete key, Luther has gone off-grid, Gabriel is still out there, and the race to locate and destroy The Entity is far from over. The AI may be invisible, but its grip on the world is only tightening.

Now, all roads lead to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The chaos is far from over: it’s just getting sharper, colder, and infinitely more dangerous. With loyalties fractured, the Entity evolving, and Ethan Hunt more relentless than ever, the next chapter promises a war between man and machine at the edge of the world, with stunts pouring in. From the icy silence of the Bering Sea to the thundering pace of high-speed chases, this is where every choice made in Dead Reckoning detonates. The build-up is behind us. What comes next? Fallout, vengeance, and a final reckoning that could burn it all down.
