In a major pre-Cannes acquisition, A24 has secured global rights to The Peasant, a medieval revenge epic led by Dev Patel, in a deal valued at approximately $30 million. The agreement was finalized just ahead of the Cannes market, where high-profile action titles continue to draw competitive interest from international buyers.
Originally penned by Ms. Marvel writer Will Dunn and featured on the 2023 Black List, The Peasant has since been reimagined by Patel, who will direct, co-write, and star. Set in 14th-century feudal India, the film follows a humble shepherd whose life is upended by a violent raid from mercenary knights. What begins as a personal vendetta quickly expands into a wider conflict, merging large-scale historical drama with stylized action — drawing early comparisons to Braveheart, John Wick, and Arthurian myth.
The project is produced by Thunder Road Pictures, the company behind Patel’s directorial debut Monkey Man, alongside Fifth Season. Producers Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chris Morrison are leading the production, with Graham Taylor, Chris Rice, Christopher Slager, and Dan Guando executive producing for Fifth Season. Patel’s own banner, Minor Realm, is also attached as a producing partner. CAA Media Finance negotiated the deal on behalf of Fifth Season.
Industry insiders note that the film attracted robust interest from multiple studios, driven by Patel’s growing reputation as a multifaceted storyteller and the project’s genre-bending appeal. The acquisition marks a strategic move for A24, which continues to expand its global slate with high-concept international titles.
Patel’s collaboration with Thunder Road marks a reunion following the success of Monkey Man, which was acquired by Universal and released earlier this year. His recent work includes leading roles in David Lowery’s The Green Knight and Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, further establishing his range across auteur-led cinema and genre fare.
With production on The Peasant expected to begin later this year, the film is already generating conversation as a potential franchise starter. As the Cannes market prepares to open, A24’s timely investment positions the film as one of the most closely watched titles of the season.
