Lizzy Passion doesn’t dress up the struggle at the heart of her new single “CHANGE.” The country singer and her band, the Cowboy Assassins, confront the messy reality of wanting to become a different person and finding that wanting it isn’t always enough.
Featuring Canyon Queens, the song leans into Passion’s barroom-meets-church approach to country, pairing a lived-in vocal performance with the emotional weight of its subject. “CHANGE” draws from personal battles with growth and addiction, but Passion leaves enough space for the song to speak beyond her own experience.
There is a looseness to the recording that fits the material. Passion and the Cowboy Assassins built these songs through live performance rather than starting in a studio, and that history comes through in the music. The track feels played rather than pieced together, with the kind of rough edges that give a country song some character.
And that connection to a local audience has become important to Passion since settling in Malibu after moving from outside Fort Worth. She has spent the past year returning to smaller Southern California venues with the Cowboy Assassins, alongside vocalist and guitarist Juan Peligro, ahead of her first full-band studio album, due in November.
“I hope that people are encouraged by these songs, and that it brings a smile to their faces,” Passion says. More than anything, she wants “CHANGE” to get people out of their houses and into the rooms where the songs began: live, loud and shared.
