Prima Apollinaare’s new single “Amazon” arrives as one of the clearest expressions yet of an artist who has spent years learning how to trust her own voice. The track comes from 23, her four-song EP released in May, and has since reached No. 18 on the iTunes Alternative chart, her highest placement to date.
There is a sense of release in “Amazon” that fits the larger story behind 23. Prima’s music has long drawn from resilience, memory and self-belief, but the new material feels less interested in explaining the past than making something useful from it. On “Amazon,” her pop instincts carry the song forward without sanding away the personal edge that gives it weight.
That balance has become central to Prima’s independent career. Born in Monza, Italy, she grew up surrounded by music but was discouraged from pursuing it herself. She eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1997, worked a succession of jobs, and later returned to music after her children were older.
Acting credits followed, including Carnival Row and Mozart in the Jungle, but songwriting became the place where she could finally speak without the restrictions that once surrounded the piano in her childhood home.
The new EP pushes further into that territory. While “Didn’t Look Back” revisits being left at boarding school, “Automobile” returns to memories of her father and the Monza racetrack. These songs make the EP feel like a record of someone finally giving old memories new language.
“Amazon” sits comfortably inside that evolution, adding another piece to the story of an artist who has spent years reclaiming music on her own terms. With 23, Prima Apollinaare continues to turn that history into something distinctly hers.
