As the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival unfolds on the French Riviera, Asia’s presence has emerges as one of the defining forces of this year’s festival.
From the jury room to the Palais staircase, Asian filmmakers, actors and cultural figures arrived at Cannes 2026 with unusual creative weight, across competition slate and international industry circuit.
Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is leading the festival’s nine-member jury, becoming the first Korean director to take on the role, alongside Chinese-American filmmaker Chloé Zhao.

Inside the Palais, Asian cinema has secured some of the festival’s most anticipated premieres, with Japanese auteurs Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Koji Fukada presenting new works, while South Korean director Na Hong-jin returned to competition with Hope, his first feature in a decade.
The red carpet reflected that same creative momentum.

Chinese actress Gong Li delivered one of opening night’s most commanding appearances in sculptural Balenciaga, while Indian actress Alia Bhatt drew global attention in a custom Tamara Ralph couture gown on the opening day, paired with a draped dupatta that subtly referenced South Asian heritage.

Zhao opted for understated elegance in Gabriela Hearst, contrasting with the theatrical glamour brought by Chinese stars including Zhang Tianqi, Xie Keyin, Zhou Ye, Zhao Tao, Chang Sisi, Lay Zhang and Tian Xuning, who attended with L’Oréal Paris.
Chinese BL stars He Yan Chao and He Chang Xi (also known as XiZhao) also joined the growing Chinese presence on the Croisette.
Japan marked a particularly significant year at Cannes as the Country of Honour at the Marché du Film. Alongside Hamaguchi and Kore-eda, actresses Takako Matsu and Shizuka Ishibashi attended in support of Fukada’s Nagi Notes, while Haruka Ayase and Kotaro Daigo appeared for the premiere of Kore-eda’s Sheep in the Box.
Actress and producer MEGUMI also hosted the festival’s widely attended “Japanese Night” event, while Tao Okamoto walked the carpet for Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden.
Thailand emerged with one of the festival’s most visible celebrity delegations. Chompoo Araya returned to Cannes in couture appearances tied to Nespresso and L’Oréal Paris, joined by Nutchana Nuttanicha, Rebecca Armstrong and Gemini Norawit Titicharoenrak as part of the brand’s festival ambassador lineup.
Win Metawin attended high-profile events as a Friend of Nespresso, while BamBam appeared at the Thailand Pavilion in support of the horror title Confessions of a Shaman.
Mike Angelo and rising actor-model Harit Buayoi also made appearances during festival screenings and red carpet events, alongside Thai actor Keng Harit.
South Korea’s presence extended beyond the jury. Jun Ji-hyun and Ji Chang-wook attended the premiere of Colony, while BLACKPINK star and actress Jisoo made history at Canneseries as the first Asian artist to receive the Madame Figaro Rising Star Award.
India, meanwhile, maintained a strong presence across film, fashion and digital media. Alongside Bhatt, strutting down the carpet as a L’Oréal ambassador, while filmmaker Payal Kapadia chaired the Critics’ Week jury following her Grand Prix win last year.
Actresses including Aditi Rao Hydari, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi and Kalyani Priyadarshan also attended this year’s festival, while Punjabi film stars Roopi Gill and Himmat Sandhu represented Punjabi cinema at Cannes while promoting their upcoming film Chardikala.
Pakistani actress Sanam Saeed also made her Cannes debut this year as part of the ‘South Asian Women Excellence in Cinema & Arts’ initiative.
At Cannes 2026, Asia’s impact has extended far beyond isolated red carpet moments. Across competition films, jury leadership, industry showcases and global premieres, Asian artists and filmmakers have become central to the identity of this year’s festival, which is a reflection of how decisively the region now shapes international cinema and culture.
