Netflix reveals “Soul Mate” trailer ahead of May 14 global release

Netflix Drops Soul Mate Trailer, Sets May 14 Premiere for BL Drama

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Soul Mate, its upcoming Japanese BL drama led by Hayato Isomura and Ok Taec-yeon, setting the stage for a decade-spanning love story that crosses continents and emotional fault lines. The eight-episode series, written and directed by Shunki Hashizume, will premiere globally on May 14, 2026.

The trailer introduces Ryu Narutaki, played by Isomura, a former ice hockey prodigy who leaves Japan after a life-altering incident. His journey takes him to Berlin, where a near-fatal church fire becomes the turning point of his life. He is rescued by Johan Hwang, a Korean boxer portrayed by Taec-yeon, marking the beginning of an unlikely yet deeply personal connection.

Across its two-minute preview, Soul Mate traces the evolving relationship between the two men over ten years, moving through Berlin, Seoul and Tokyo. The narrative leans into themes of guilt, healing and emotional dependence, as both characters confront their past while building a fragile future together. There are moments of quiet intimacy set against the weight of unresolved trauma, suggesting a character-driven romance grounded in vulnerability rather than spectacle.

Taec-yeon, known for his work with K-pop band 2PM and series like Vincenzo, continues his steady transition into global acting projects. Isomura, recognised for Alice in Borderland, brings a restrained intensity to a role shaped by loss and redemption.

With its international backdrop and slow-burn storytelling, Soul Mate positions itself as a contemplative addition to Netflix’s expanding BL catalogue, focusing on connection shaped over time rather than instant romance.
