Mattel has welcomed Lunar New Year 2026 with a brand-new special edition Barbie doll.
Designed by Joyce Chen, the 2026 doll is laden with the typical red and gold accents that pay homage to Chinese traditions, infused with elements related to Year of the Horse.
On her Instagram, Chen describes the doll as inspired by both ” beautiful modern and traditional Chinese trends.”
The design incorporates the lucky peony symbol into the bold print of the dress as well as into accessories like the golden earrings. The dress is also crafted in a modern and elegant style featuring a pleated bodice detail inspired by the fan and pleated look of a Chinese horse-face skirt.

Her caption further reads : “This year’s Barbie Lunar New Year Doll steps into the Lunar New Year celebration in a lucky red qipao. She steals the scene in this quintessential dress with a modern mermaid gown silhouette, traditional mandarin collar, and meihua plum blossom prints. Wishing a happy and prosperous Lunar New Year.”
This is not the first time that Mattel has released a Lunar New Year doll with the first one being in January 2021. In 2022, Mattel also teamed with world-renowned Chinese fashion designer Guo Pei to deliver a blend of high-fashion artistry and enriching culture.
Showcasing Mattel‘s commitment to creating culturally-rooted and unique collectibles, there have also been a range of themed dolls for various occasions around the world including Día de Muertos, Diwali and Christmas.
