A season of joy, awe and discovery comes beckoning as the much-awaited Flamingo Festival 2026 kicks off with thousands of migratory birds make Pulicat Lake in Tirupati district their temporary home.
The annual two-day event which took place across January 10 and 11, delivered a vibrant blend of nature, biodiversity , eco-tourism and culture, coinciding with the peak migratory season between October and March, when Pulicat – India’s second-largest brackish water lagoon across Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu – transforms into a haven for over 80 bird species, including pelicans, painted storks, and flamingos.
Offering a unique mix of bird watching – spread across Pulicat, Nelapattu, BV Palyam, Atakakani Thippa, Irakkam Island, Ubbalamadugu and Periyapalyam -and cultural performances spanning dance, music and traditional celebrations at the Government Junior College in Sullurpet, the Flamingo Festival is an extravaganza with a rich history.
An annual tradition that has transformed Pulicat into a hub of activity since the early-2000s, this year’s edition of the festival was rooted in the theme of “A Celebration of Nature, Culture & Biodiversity,” featuring bird-watching tours, local folk dances and music, boat rides, exhibitions on avian ecology and more.
What makes the Flamingo Festival so special is that the joy of nature and bird-watching continues to allure us beyond the two-day celebrations as migratory birds will return every day, rippling across the brackish waters of Pulicat until March.
