Tom Cruise bags his first-ever Oscar at Governors Awards

Hollywood icon Tom Cruise bagged his first-ever Oscar at the Governors Awards 2025.

Cruise who was previously nominated for the Oscars four times – including Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia, and Best Picture as a producer for Top Gun: Maverick – received the honorary award for his impact, achievements and influence in Hollywood.

Known his awe-inspiring stunts and celebrated film franchises, Cruise received the Academy Honorary Award presented by director Alejandro G. Inarritu at the 16th Governors Awards at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, on Sunday, November 16.

In an emotional acceptance speech, the Mission Impossible star, remarked, “The cinema, it takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”

Other renowned figures including Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas also received honorary Oscars at the annual event highlighting their achievements across acting, music, choreography, and production design.
