Zayn Malik is crossing from the recording studio to the digital battlefield with “Break Free,” an original track written for Borderlands 4, the latest installment in Gearbox Software’s long-running first-person shooter series. The new song arrives September 19, following the game’s September 12 debut on PlayStation and Xbox, with a Nintendo Switch 2 release slated for October 3.

The British singer-songwriter, who describes himself as an “avid gamer,” collaborated with 2K and Gearbox on the track, drawing inspiration from Borderlands 4’s expressive art style and new setting.

“When I’m not working, my usual place is in front of the console, gaming with my friends back home in the UK,” Zayn told Variety in an exclusive report. “I’ve played Borderlands before, so when I was asked to collaborate on the music, it was a no brainer.”

Zayn gave fans an early look at the project during a Twitch livestream on his channel on September 13, where he played Borderlands 4 while discussing the collaboration. He also dropped hints about what’s next for his music career.

“Next album? Soon actually.. but soon for the new record got some new music coming up soon with a new collaborator… got some big things lined up… I think it’s gonna be a pretty big year,” he told viewers. The stream featured more unexpected reveals, including a nod to South Asian influences on his upcoming record:

“I have some songs coming out in Urdu… the next record that’s coming out is a continuation of Mind Of Mine… more Pop R&B, there’s a lot of cool collaborations and more South-Asian influence there!”

The Twitch session also sparked excitement with playful teases. “Yeah I did cut my hair we did some filming recently can’t tell what’s for so yeah what do you think wink 😆,” Zayn said, teasing a mystery project and sending fans into detective mode — with theories ranging from a long-awaited collaboration with his old bandmate Louis Tomlinson to whispers of a Netflix documentary that popped up earlier this week.

Zayn also surprised fans with a possible tour plan: “I’m definitely gonna come to Brazil if there’s an upcoming tour wink wink so yeah I love Brazil!” Beyond music, he even floated new creative ambitions: “I wanna do my own radio show as we’ve just been talking about it… we’re living in a fucking cool time!”

While fans anticipate the release of “Break Free,” Zayn reflected on what gaming has meant to him over the years. Growing up in Northern England, he says his love for games dates back to receiving a Super Nintendo on his third birthday:

“That’s 29 years in the game.” He praised Borderlands 4’s visuals and tone, describing them as “very vivid and expressive and feels very anime,” and noted that the narrative-driven gameplay feels rare in today’s market.

“Break Free” marks Zayn’s first new release since his 2024 album Room Under the Stairs. While he has not confirmed a release date for his next record, he’s made clear that new material — and possibly a tour — is on the horizon. For now, his fans have a new soundtrack to one of gaming’s biggest fall releases.
