Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy is heading back to Indian cinemas this year in a newly restored 4K format, giving audiences a chance to revisit one of cinema’s most enduring sagas on the big screen.

PVR INOX confirmed the re-release, which will roll out sequentially starting September 12 with The Godfather, followed by The Godfather Part II on October 17 and The Godfather Part III—released in its 2020 recut version The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone—on November 14.

The staggered release marks the first time Indian audiences will experience Coppola’s trilogy in such close succession across theatres. Restored in ultra-high definition, the films are expected to highlight Gordon Willis’s celebrated cinematography with a new clarity while retaining the operatic sweep of Mario Puzo’s mafia epic.

Adapted from Puzo’s bestselling novel, The Godfather trilogy charts the evolution of the Corleone family from patriarch Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) to his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino), who reluctantly assumes power before becoming a feared mafia boss. Beyond its iconic dialogue and unforgettable performances, the trilogy is often credited with redefining the gangster genre while probing deeper themes of family, loyalty, morality, and the corrosive effects of power.

Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX Ltd, called the trilogy “the gold standard of cinematic storytelling – a masterclass in performance, direction, and narrative depth.” In a statement, she added:

“At PVR INOX, our constant endeavour is to curate the finest cinematic experiences, and there is no greater honour than bringing this legendary saga back to our cinemas. Loved by generations across the globe, it has inspired countless filmmakers and cinephiles. For the first time in India, audiences will experience these iconic films on the big screen in close succession. For the younger generation, it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to discover the brilliance of The Godfather on the big screen. For those who’ve loved it for decades, it’s a homecoming.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in American cinema, the trilogy has amassed Oscars, critical acclaim, and cultural influence over five decades. Brando’s brooding turn as Don Vito, Pacino’s transformation from reluctant son to ruthless don, and Robert De Niro’s portrayal of young Vito Corleone in Part II remain towering performances in film history. Coppola’s meticulous direction and Puzo’s writing established a cinematic language that continues to shape Hollywood storytelling today.

With bookings set to open soon on the PVR INOX app and website, cinephiles across India now have a chance to experience the Corleone legacy in theatres once again—this time sharper, richer, and more immersive than ever.
