Madras Day 2025 : Significance, history and iconic landmarks

Madras turns 386 today. To mark Madras Day 2025, here’s a look at the history of the city, celebrations of its founding day and a walk through some of its iconic landmarks.

Chennai – previously known as Madras – was founded on August 22, 1639. Bought by East India Company (EIC) from local monarchs, the foundations of the British Empire in India was laid here.

After India’s independence, Madras remained the capital city of Madras State. In 1969, the state was formally renamed Tamil Nadu and Madras changed its name to Chennai in 1996.

Today, this historic city marks its 386th founding day. Every year, Chennaites come together to celebrate Madras Day.

Holding immense significance for residents of the city, Madras Day has been a celebration of Chennai’s architecture, cuisine and art forms since 2004 .

The annual celebration has grown into a big festival filled with events, exhibitions, talks, and performances that explore the culture, history and evolution of the city with joy and festivities.
